This Queen of Beledi was one of Egyptian cinema’s early dance stars. She reigned for 20 years, from 1935 to 1955, age 16 to 36, and was in 47 films, mainly cameos as a dancer. (see below for the list). But she started much earlier than that. Her mother was a famous "ousta" or dance leader from Mohamed Ali Street and as early as age 13 she is pictured performing with her mother. She was also one of Badia Masabni's early dancers.
In 1955 she left her artistic and dance career to marry Mukhtar Hussein, a famous athlete turned actor (he appeared in Naima Akef’s first 2 films directed by Hussein Fowzi, among his 25 film credits). Nabawiya was 36 when they married and Mukhtar was 51. He died 9 years later at age 60, leaving Nabawiya with 3 small boys, one of whom became the well-known journalist, Baheera Mukhtar. Nabawiya was known for her signature choo choos, large hip movements, facial expressions and extreme backbends. It is said she taught Tahia Cairoca, 4 years her senior, how to play sagat.
